Changes in Recycling Services for Membership Residents
The Eco Centre/Peace Regional Waste Management Company is transitioning to a single stream blue/clear bag recycling system.
We are positioning ourselves to be in alignment with the TOPR blue bag curbside collection and to pivot with the planned Alberta Government’s province wide EPR (Extended Producer Responsibility) program. For more information and to provide your input on the EPR program, please follow the link at the bottom of this post.
For now, please place all your recyclable materials in blue/clear bags and place into the large metal bins at the Eco Centre, the Landfill, or at the Transfer Stations.
Acceptable recyclable items in the blue/clear bag are: box board (toothpaste boxes, cereal boxes, Kleenex boxes, etc…), all plastics, tin and shredded/non-shredded office paper and mixed paper.
Non-acceptable recyclable items are glass and any food contaminated items.
All black garbage bags will be treated as waste and will be discarded. Please do not use these if you want your items recycled.
Cardboard (corrugated only, NO box board) can still to be placed in the residential cardboard bunker if it does not fit in the bags.
Glass collection has been discontinued. Unfortunately, there are no markets for glass recycling at the moment. We hope this changes in the future. Glass will now be a waste stream item and should not be put into the blue/clear bags here at the Eco Centre and in TOPR, GFL curbside collected blue bags.
The Grass/Leaves & Brush/Branches bins have now been removed. This was a trial that was unfortunately unsuccessful. These bins collected far too much contamination to be utilized for compost. The bins will not be returning in the spring. We will continue to accept yard waste at the landfill where it can be properly controlled. The Town of Peace River is considering alternative solutions.
To provide an optimized recycling experience we will be securing access to and monitoring the Eco Centre. We have installed fence and gates at the front of the Eco Centre property. Starting the week of May 16th, we are changing the hours of service and will begin locking the gates after hours; see above.
Our depots located in the areas around TOPR, at St. Isidore and Nampa, have been removed, with continued curbside pickup of recyclable materials through GFL & Town of Peace River. Recyclable materials can be brought to the Eco Centre, transfer stations, or our landfill, during regular operating hours. Recycling will no longer be required to be sorted. We will accept it in clear or blue bags.
All ARMA funded and administered programs will still be collected, such as electronics, household hazardous waste and paint. We are not set up to take used oil, gas or any petroleum products at this time. It will hopefully be a soon add on.
Fluorescent bulbs, printer toner cartridges and batteries will still be collected.
The Management & Staff appreciate your patience during this transition.
We look forward to our continued recycling together now and into the future.
