I find it rather ludicrous that worldwide citizens are being asked to stop using single use plastic bags and now we are told to do just that – put recycling into a BAG!!!!
Sorting out recycling ourselves into bins is the way ALL recycling should occur. Can’t understand the decision making behind the use of bags for those who voluntarily want to recycle and reduce waste … including reducing plastic bags. What an idiotic way to encourage one to recycle … to buy plastic to recycle plastic (and other items)
The PRWMC decided to change from a sorted material (multi-stream) to a non-sorted (single stream) recycling system, for a number of very good reasons. Primarily, it assists with resident usage and helps reduce confusion by aligning ourselves with the blue bag curbside recycling system currently used in TOPR and other municipalities in Alberta. We have received a lot of positive feedback on the new single stream recycling system from our residents; citing ease of use as one of the key indicators. Enhanced buy in and usage by our residents offers better diversion by keeping otherwise potentially lost recyclable items out of our landfill.
Secondly, we anticipate new and exciting changes to recycling across Alberta in the near future with the role out of the EPR (Extended Producer Responsibly) program. Hopefully to be adopted and in place within the next year or so. By adopting a single stream recycling system now, we will be in a great position to align ourselves with, or pivot and adapt to this new program. https://www.albertarecycling.ca/news/aep-further-advances-circular-economy/
Lastly, but certainly equally as important, is that the use of clear/blue bags makes for more efficient and safer servicing, handling and processing of the recyclable materials. Keeps loose and fly away materials like Styrofoam, paper and plastics contained. Makes it easier to spot contamination which thwarts the efforts of conscientious recyclers and sends otherwise good recyclable materials to the landfill. All of these reasons on their own have merit and when combined offer a better solution for the environment.
During the transition period, you are most welcome to place your loose materials into the bins. Going forward we would ask that all materials be placed into clear/blue bags. Recycling is always evolving and we will adapt to any future changes as they arise. While it may seem counterintuitive to recycle this way now, it will hopefully make more sense as changes are adopted.
We appreciate your concern and keen interest in recycling.

Please explain your decision making.
Thank you!
